I guess @popcorn means the NodeMCU (that bundles an ESP8266), because is crazy cheap (check this one for instance), and is easy to program with a Lua interpreter.

The PUSH_ACK is a message to the gateway, not to the node. The TTN backend does not yet support confirmed messages. So, what you see is the currently expected behavior.
