I have recently assisted to a related meet up in which were shown some nodes that have a buid.in microcontroller, and a dev board to program them. I supose that that case will be much better that a soldering fight against a tricky IC. As I recall they were from microchip.
Do you know any one like that? Either way I am quite used to work with pic, so a custom board wouldn't bother me that much.
Of course, I am assuming that considering that microchip has recently enter the lora market, they have full stack support in their MAL (am I wrong?).
In regard of the getaway, I have searched for the one mentioned by @jpmeijers but they have no stock.
@gonzalocasas, are you from latin america? if so, it was very difficult to get the getaway that you mentioned (IMST)?
