@sam_uk, Send your request to a TTN global community manager, Rishabh Chauhan (community@thethingsnetwork.org). He can do it for you.

@Batilan is correct. We are in the process of decommissioning croft and one step in that process was to remove the forward from staging to croft. Until the network operations center (noc) is ready (@roman is working on this), we will still forward gateway statuses to the croft database (I'm working on this).

Gateway statuses are being forwarded to croft again, so the maps should be correct now.

Air quality sensor for PM2.5 and PM10?

Took a while but here are the answers:

The sensor measures NO2 and Loudness values, together with the temperature and humidity.
1. Are you building the sensor yourself or are you buying one?
The sensors are built by SODAQ (www.sodaq.com)

  1. What would be the cost of it?
    Around €300 a piece

  2. Have you deployed it for production yet? Or, are you in the stage of building it?
Currently in the last building stage, we expect the first results in a few weeks

  3. Is it producing reliable measurements comparing to big and expensive ones that are used by the government meteorological agencies?
No, but multiple sensors can be calibrated against each other to give a good idea for differences in air quality between different locations.

  4. How did you make it compatible with TTN?
It is built and designed to work with LoRa. There is a RN2483 module inside.

Elaborating on question 4, what motivates me is that a fine grained, mesh)network of sensors, although of lower quality, provide us with a whole new insight into the different variables that have to do with air quality when compared to only the few "high quality" sensors used by for instance the environmental agency. Especially when they are used to measure a larger area. In such cases the data from the mesh-network enriches the data gathered by the environmental agency, but is interesting on it's own accord as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soOZRqREAXg is an example of someone riding a bike through Rotterdam with a graph that shows the measured particles. The reliability of the way this data is gathered can/should of course be questioned, but either way it does point out some very interesting effects (i.e. standing a few meters back from an intersection greatly reduces the amount of particles in the air, and probably in your lungs).

Also, check out this publication by the Dutch institute for health and environment on using different sensors to measure air quality: http://www.rivm.nl/dsresource?objectid=rivmp:302829&type=org&disposition=inline&ns_nc=1 especially page 31 with the comparison table!

Good move @sam_uk!

I wish others did the same, especially ones when the "core team" (only because they were first to click some website button) has fallen asleep at the wheel and the real action is being done by "contributors"

@MatthijsJ, Thank you very much for collecting the information.

And your approach with lots of cheaper sensors instead of one with a high price is similar to what I've been thinking too. I'll be very curious about the result of your solution once it is deployed. Because your case could be the proof that cheaper sensor approach could provide meaningful data for people.

Even though I wanted to know about PM2.5/PM10 sensors, your info gives me some idea about air pollution measurement using TTN.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soOZRqREAXg was very interesting.

I hope you can share the results with us via the forum after you deploy your solution.

LoRa for rural electrification in developing countries

Hi. Sorry in advance for a not-very-advanced question.

We are putting small solar power stations of 100-1000W into remote villages in Vanuatu and other countries. These run 24V DC loads like mills, refrigerators and water pumps in a village centre (example here). We want to use a current sensor to measure DC currents of up to 50 Amps using a hall sensor or shunt, and also measure voltage. Then communicate this data back to a cloud server via the GSM/GPRS phone network or any other means. 30% of villages have no GSM phone coverage at all, so we would have to manually pick up the data from a local data-logger, but if we could use LoRa to send the data from village to village over distances no more than 1-2 km between points (rural, not built up urban), then we might be able to get back to an area where GSM coverage exists (we're not going to see serious LoRaWAN / Sigfox or similar base stations in our markets any time soon). More on our project can be read here and a map of an example island of proposed DC minigrids can be found here. The solar milling power stations cost $1000-5000 each, so if monitoring costs us about 10%, we have a $100-500 budget. I am looking for solutions in the $150-250 range, if possible. Any suggestions warmly welcomed. You can email me directly at stewart@villageinfrastructure.org.

We bought the Discovery IoT. The price was about the same like you posted. They have gw module that can be reconfigured for both 868 or 915. They also hv 433, but different hw.
